Krobo Land Election 2020 Insights
‘A people that elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves and traitors are not victims, but accomplices’ ~~~ George Orwell.
As it is noted several years ago, ‘democracy is a government of the people, by the people and for the people.’ And it is only through elections, as part of the democratic process that the citizens are able to elect leaders that will truly represent them.
Leaders that are supposed to serve the common national and patriotic interests and aspirations of the citizens, not parochial personal interest of looting that state dry. But in this democratic process, the citizens are not passive agents but active participants.
Thus, citizens actions or inactions that seem to perpetuate impunity, stealing, and corruptions, make the citizens accessories, collaborators, not victims since they tacitly validate some of these actions of the politicians.
On December 7, 2020, Ghana will go into the polls to elect persons (a president and parliamentarians [MP]) that will steer the affairs of the country for the next four years.
Various issues – economy, governance, infrastructure, security, education, employment, etc. are going to drive who the people vote for. The Krobo Land Area in the Eastern Region also has pertinent issues that inform who they cast their ballot for.
Some of these issues are historical, while others are contemporary. Our aim for: ‘Krobo Land Election 2020 Insights’ is to engage the people – ordinary persons on the street, and experts – of the Krobo Land to gauge what inform their choice of political parties and individuals to steer the affairs of the area in the next four years.
Indeed, elections are about choices about political parties, policies, programmes, ideas, and persons to execute these policies. As the election 2020 approaches in Krobo Land, what are the things that people are yearning to be fixed. Infrastructure (roads, markets, toilets, schools, hospitals), social services (water, electricity), economy and employment opportunities, governance and security, or general wellbeing of the populace?
Furthermore, what are the leading political parties doing in the area, what are their track records of meeting the basic needs of the people and their plans for the future.
These are pertinent issues that will engage the attention of the people and interrogate to drive the electioneering process. Besides the political parties, what are the personalities involved. Political parties do not govern in a vacuum, it is people that govern.
There is the need to engage and assess the capabilities and track records of those putting themselves up to be elected to serve the area. Are they persons that only serve their personal or party or the general population? Can we trust them with our mandate? Are they persons we can easily approach and discuss our pertinent issues? These are the limitless questions we should be asking as we go into election 2020.
Finally, all elections are local. What are the key issues in your community, locality, and neighbourhood that will inform your vote? As we interrogate these issues, we should be mindful that we are one people and we should not allow elections to divide. Electoral violence is unnecessary. And more importantly, do not be an accomplice in electing corrupt, thieves, traitors, and imposters.
God bless Ghana and Krobo Land.
