Akuse Government Hospital, located in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region, is one of Ghana’s oldest public health facilities. Established around 1911, the hospital is widely believed to have been originally built by the Germans during the colonial period. For more than a century, it has remained a major referral point for communities in Akuse, Lower Manya Krobo, and adjoining areas stretching into Greater Accra and parts of the Volta Region.
From its modest beginnings as a small health post, Akuse Government Hospital has evolved into a full-service medical facility, providing outpatient care, inpatient wards for men, women, children, and maternity services, as well as surgical and emergency interventions. Over the decades, it has become an indispensable health center, attending to thousands of patients each year despite challenges with infrastructure and logistics.
The hospital has had significant milestones in its long history. In April 2021, it gained national recognition when doctors successfully delivered conjoined twins, the first such case in the hospital’s history. The event not only highlighted the dedication of its medical staff but also drew public attention to the need for more investment in neonatal and specialized healthcare.
In recent years, Akuse Government Hospital has been ranked among the top five performing government hospitals in the Eastern Region, according to the Ghana Health Service. This recognition underscores the commitment of its management and staff to delivering quality healthcare even under constrained resources.
Despite its progress, the hospital continues to face challenges. Calls have been made for the construction of a modern Accident and Emergency Unit, expansion of facilities, and provision of up-to-date medical equipment to meet the growing demands of its catchment area. Local leaders, civil society organizations, and philanthropists have supported the hospital over the years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, but more sustained investment is needed to match its over-100-year legacy.
Today, Akuse Government Hospital stands not only as a historical institution but also as a lifeline for communities within and beyond Lower Manya Krobo. Its enduring presence is a reminder of the crucial role of public health facilities in Ghana’s development and the importance of continued support to ensure its sustainability for generations to come.
