To address the alarming rise in motorbike-related fatalities in the area, the Akosombo Police Division in the Eastern Region, under the able leadership of Chief/Supt. Doris Grant, Akosombo Divisional Police Commander, officially launched a Public Safety Campaign on Thursday, August 14th, 2025. The campaign is aimed at sensitizing Okada and Pragia riders across the Division.

The initiative, which will cover the Akosombo, Odumase-Krobo, Somanya, and Akuse District Police Commands, seeks to help riders acquire the right documentation, undergo proper training, and adopt safer practices — measures expected to go a long way in saving lives and protecting property.

The sensitization exercise, spearheaded by the Divisional MTTD Commander, ASP Emmanuel Amoafo, focuses on clamping down on the following illegal and life-threatening practices:
Carrying a passenger in front of the rider
Carrying more than one person on the rear seat
Carrying passengers without a firmly fixed seat
Operating unregistered motorcycles
Riding without a valid license
Riding or carrying passengers without helmets
Using motorcycles without insurance or a valid roadworthy certificate
These are punishable offenses under Ghanaian traffic laws.

On the first day of the campaign, the team visited the Kpong Main Okada Station, where they engaged riders in constructive discussions. The sensitization drive then continued at the Roman Catholic Parish Hall in Agormanya, hosting riders from Nuaso to Asitey in a massively attended forum. Later in the day, the campaign team engaged Okada and Pragia riders at the Somanya Roundabout in the Yilo Krobo Municipality.

Speaking to krobolandonline.com after the exercise, ASP Emmanuel Amoafo stressed the need to go the extra mile to save lives, noting that the unchecked operations of motorcycles and Pragia tricycles continue to claim innocent lives. He reiterated the Division’s commitment to partnering with stakeholders to ensure the safety of the jurisdiction.

As part of the campaign, LEYLA Images, a renowned photography and media agency in Krobo Land, has officially partnered with the Akosombo Police Division. They will provide media support and produce all educational flyers for the campaign as part of their corporate social responsibility.
